Daring Bakers

When my mom first went gluten free 5 years ago, I looked at the sawdust cookies she was eating and snorted to myself, "I'm SO glad I don't have to be gluten free!" I felt bad for her: There weren't a whole lot of alternative flours and gf options for her (and awareness wasn't as high back then as it is today).

Then, 3 years ago, I also made the decision to put my health first. I went on a gluten free and refined sugar free diet and felt marvelous. I also lost 15 pounds. The gluten free part stuck (but it's difficult to be a pastry chef if you are sugar free). I feel so much better, and I'm lucky that more and more people know what gluten is (and furthermore how to avoid it). I've done lots of experimenting in my kitchen and had some complete bricks of a cookie (which would make a good doorstop, if you need one! I can give you my failure of a recipe), and I've also had some successes.

I am not a consistent blogger (I think my last blog was in 2007, when I got engaged), but I DO check out a lot of the GF blogs online. I'm always enamored with the Daring Bakers Challenge and I LOVE drooling over the photos on Tastespotting (food porn, anyone?) so I thought I'd try this blog thing once more and join the Daring Bakers. If anything, it will give me more food for my GF arsenal.

Wish me luck!
